    Great informative post, David.
When editing the xml files, I find Notepad to be limiting.
Users might want to look at one of these alternates:

Microsoft XML Notepad 2007 ~ this is a full-featured XML editor
    Download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=72d6aa49-787d-4118-ba5f-4f30fe913628&displaylang=en

NotePad++ ~ this is a Notepad or Wordpad replacement that has good xml editing tools
    Download: (choose npp.5.4.5.Installer.exe) http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/files/

    Thanks for skipping ahead.

I am wondering what version of Civil 3D you are working in. Will this work in C3D 2009 and earlier?

I have only run this in versions 2009 and 2010. However not much if anything has changed with Part Builder in earlier versions.

I am not sure if it will. Autoesk did not advertise and overhaul to the Part Builder features. I suspect it might. If you have a custom part, just give it a shot. It will not take too long to find out.
