Ever run into that Civil 3D file that just won’t open? You’ve tried recover, recoverall, insert, xref, and all the other tricks… no dice. Well here’s one more to add to your list.
DWG TrueView is a free download from Autodesk intended to let the world open DWG files without having to buy any software. It also has the DWG Convert tool built in.
A couple of times now, I was able to run a stubborn Civil 3D file through this conversion and get a workable file to come out the other side. And it DID preserve the Civil 3D objects without reducing them to plan old lines, polylines, etc. What I’ve done is simply run a file through the conversion without any change in file format or anything. There’s something about the process that seems to strip out the nasties and give you an open-able file.
Not saying it will work every time, but in the past few months it has allowed me to recover a few files that I would have otherwise given up on.
